Story Workshop Writing & Reading Programs

Story Workshop Institute

SWI is a non-profit organization devoted to the improvement of writing and communication in all its forms. We endeavor to make it possible for students in the Chicago area to learn crucial writing skills they need to succeed in school and the world beyond the classroom.

John Schultz, originator of the Story Workshop approach, founded the Story Workshop Institute in1997 to support the growing number of teachers using the methodology and to ensure the quality of instruction to their students.

Working with public and private schools in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, the Story Workshop Institute offers a variety of writing programs for students of all ages, their teachers and parents.

Members

SWI currently serves 44 members who are certified by the Institute for their mastery of the Story Workshop approach to the teaching of writing.

Members use the approach at all levels of education and through social service programs. Their writing appears in a range of publications, from literary and academic journals to newspapers and magazines. The majority of members have or are pursuing a master's degree or higher.

SWI supports both the academic and artistic endeavors of its members, believing that teachers who consistently develop their own writing processes are the most effective teachers of writing.

In addition to certification, members receive artistic and pedagogical workshops and ongoing professional development opportunities, publishing opportunities, a quarterly newsletter, and access to the Institute's resource library.

"He's a writer now. He's always at the computer, writing writing writing. His self-esteem is so much better. I can see it in everything he does at school. He used to be really shy about talking to me and other adults. Now he comes right up to us and tells us all about what's going on. His oral communication skills have really improved."
