Story Workshop Writing & Reading Programs

College & Adult Classes

On the job and in school, the clearest advantage you can have is the power to write effectively. For over 35 years, John Schultz's Story Workshop approach has made writing easier, more powerful, and more enjoyable for thousands of people of all ages and abilities. This includes graduate, undergraduate, and continuing education students as well as working professional and creative writers.

"The way the program is structured helps writing unfold in a natural way. For me the improvement is so dramatic, I feel very proud."
—Student from a Story Workshop Professional Writing Program

If you've taken writing workshops before, you'll be surprised and delighted to find a whole new way of coming at writing in a Story Workshop class. And it's engaging and pleasurable, as writing and learning should be. Our active approach and the immediate, encouraging feedback you get from a certified Story Workshop instructor emphasize the pleasure that comes from good writing.

"I would suspect a lot of adults have lost the sense of fun in writing and would love to get it back... I found the fun again. Every week got better."
—Student from a Story Workshop Creative Writing Program

Because our innovative approach integrates writing, reading, listening, speaking, and sense of audience, you develop your reading comprehension and problem-solving skills along with your writing. These skills open the doors to success in modern professions; Story Workshop students have found success not only in writing, journalism, editing, television, film, radio, advertising, and teaching, but also in law, banking, administration, business consulting, marketing, and other professional areas where writing is centrally important.

"The Story Workshop method is unique in its ability to help you see better, hear better, and, as a result, write better... (It) helps you develop your writing skills to the fullest."
—Chuck Rudnick, Executive Vice President & Group Creative Director, Foote, Cone, and Belding

We have two different Story Workshop programs: one for professional writing and one for creative writing.

The Professional Writing Program:
This program, specifically designed to meet professional needs, teaches you how to take your audience into account and get across what you have to say in the most effective written form. You learn how to develop, organize, and revise writing projects—on the job, in college, and in graduate school. The program emphasizes voice and content, analytic thinking, and sensitivity to expressive and accurate language. You learn how to hone usage and grammar skills in ways that make sense to you. As you increase your skill in writing and reading, you grow the problem-solving abilities that improve the way ideas are communicated in writing and in speech.

The Creative Writing Program:
This program works for anyone looking to discover new stories as well as writers engaged in pushing longer works. The program emphasizes imaginative process, forms of fiction writing, and the role of point-of-view in storytelling. You will develop seeing and voice, character, dialogue and scenes, and sense of story and story development. This includes reading published work and examining the natural connections between your imagination and a variety of types of writing. The flexibility of your writing process and the power of your writing become stronger to you and those who read your work.
